Life has Ups and Downs; Stitches have Zigs and Zags

Aileen Diaz, Staff Writer

Ms. Bouchard’s 7th grade Lab class is reading Esperanza Rising. The novel is about a girl named Esperanza in Mexico whose mother is forced to marry Esperanza’s uncle after her father’s death. Esperanza’s family fled to the United States without her beloved grandmother and the book becomes about reuniting with grandma. Esperanza’s Grandma teaches her a zigzag crochet stitch and uses it as a metaphor for life’s ups and downs. Learning the zig zag stitch in class was also fraught with ups and downs, but the class enjoyed a little hands-on crafting activity for a change.
