Every senior tends to get nervous knowing that they have to start off their new path with college when they graduate. It’s a huge step for most seniors and the experiences are often unknown. In order to alleviate some of the senior stress, The Metronome decided to speak with some of the METS alumni and family members about the advice they wish they would have gotten before their freshman year in college.   Here at METS, our seniors are stressing about making their final decisions about where their freshman year is going to be. The Metronome gave college freshman an opportunity to help our class of 2019 out with some real words of wisdom. The college students interviewed gave great responses and honest tips about college life.

The first interview was with Audrey Megne who is now a freshman at Harrisburg University looking to major in Forensic Science.

The Metronome: How is it so far in college ?

Audrey:  College so far is fun and stressful. It’s been a little difficult getting adjusted to college life because I get homesick from time to time.  So far, it’s great as long as you’re completing your work.

The Metronome: Is it that tense when it comes to be being freshman?

Audrey :  Yes, it is tense because you’re new and you’re trying to get the hang of things. All of your work, time management, and keeping track of your grades is your responsibility.  There are people who are willing to help you but, you have to find them for yourself.

The Metronome:  What would you say to upcoming seniors that are about to graduate and become freshmen?

Audrey:  I would say, “Be Prepared!!!” Enjoy your senior year because once you get to college, it’s the real deal.

The Metronome: What would be some good advice you wish you had about college?

Audrey: Every decision you make is important, so try to make good ones. Also, don’t rush to try and do everything at once. For example, don’t rush when making friends because you have to  know who to trust. Most importantly, work first, party later.

The Metronome:  Do you miss your senior year?

Audrey:  Oh, yes! Of course, I miss being a senior . Senior year had so many good memories. At the same time, you have to say goodbye and embrace the new chapter of your life.

The second interview was with a last year senior name Joshua G. who is a junior at Centenary University majoring in Criminal Justice.

The Metronome: How is it so far in college?

Joshua: College is good.  Right before the winter break college finals are hectic but, right now,  things are good thankfully. It’s the start of a brand new semester.

The Metronome:  Is it that tense when it comes to be being a college freshman?

Joshua: It’s not really tense, but so much is going on freshmen can’t help getting nervous. You just have to know the right time to relax and when to get to work.  Freshmen need to know that college is still school and nothing has changed that much. You still have homework, exams, papers, and you have to be in charge of all those deadlines.  Your professors don’t take late work usually or remind you when deadlines are coming up.

The Metronome: What would you say to upcoming seniors that are about to graduate and become freshmen?

Joshua:  Set alarms, write your reminders down, and definitely update a calendar to help remember what’s due first or when there are multiple deadlines coming on the same day!

The Metronome: What would be some good advice high school seniors need to have about college?

Joshua: Always get things done on time! College professors don’t take late work usually.

The Metronome: Do you miss your senior year in high school?

Joshua: Sure, I miss my high school senior year! It was the hardest year in high school but, it actually got me ready for the real world!

The third interview was with a college senior, Ada Lazu,  at Saint Peter’s University. Ada Lazu is about to graduate with and her Masters Degree in Art Education. When she is done, Ada will have her Certification in Education for students with Special Needs.

The Metronome: What would be some good advice to give our seniors about college?

Ada: My advice would be, “if you believe in yourself then you will go far.”  However, hard work really does pay off.

Metronome: Do you miss your senior year?

Ada: Senior year wasn’t easy for me but, I kept pushing myself to strive harder. When I had people that doubted my potential, their doubt helped me fight harder to pass and get through college for my first year.

Metronome: I know you have to go but what are a few words for seniors overall?

Ada: Focus !!! There’s so much more, of course, but, keep that in your mind set.

All three interviews had different opinions about college and what they believe to be the most important focus.  The Metronome hopes our seniors use what they feel will help college freshmen remain successful. Since the dropout rate for college freshmen is 50%, we’d like to thank our college upperclassmen for taking time to provide us with valuable insight for our class of 2019.
